Alexander Ekman: Hammer
Göteborg Opera

Alexander Ekman, internationally renowned Swedish choreographer, presents Hammer, a bold work in two acts set to music by Mikael Karlsson. Ekman's idea was to create a joyful, entertaining, and energetic piece that is unpredictable and innovative, shedding light on contemporary society with a touch of humor. In Hammer, Ekman's third creation for the GöteborgsOperans Danskompani, a harmonious community initially shares an altruistic lifestyle inspired by the hippie era. However, as they progress towards the modern age with its omnipresent surveillance, their behavior becomes increasingly egocentric and individualistic. In the second act, the narrative shifts to depict self-conscious individuals trapped in isolated bubbles of loneliness, who eventually are forced to abandon their image-centric facades and return to an altruistic existence. This satirical critique of media culture is both poignant and humorous, leaving audiences reflecting on the direction of modern society. Ekman's work is known for its visually powerful commentary on self-image and contemporary issues, often delivered with a humorous twist
