Hofesh Shechter’s Clowns
A ballet in video

Clowns is a half hour long choreographic piece created by Hofesh Shechter for a group of ten dancers. The work was conceived by Shechter in 2016, and later it was specially readapted with the aim of becoming this film, with plans and approaches thought specifically for the screen. Set in a grotesque circus, the work features dancers disguised as 18th-century clowns, playing against a red curtain illuminated by garlands of theatrical lights. The artists move with an aggressive rhythm that reflects a world fascinated by violence. Clowns is the perfect piece for the screen. Recorded in an innovative way, it offers a new perspective, allowing you to get closer to the ferocity and energy of the dancers.

Dancing to the hypnotic rhythm of a score that combines electronic and orchestral elements, Shechter's clowns destroy each other in a whirlwind of murder and desire, demonstrating a great ability to translate the political and social spirit of the time. As the critic pointed out, Shechter shows us how deep we've fallen, mesmerized by the entertainment on our way down. The piece recalls the fall of Rome, with its gratuitous violence and sensuality. Shechter makes something horrible palatable, amusing us to death. This piece is a warning that invites us to pay attention: the executioner always ends up being the victim of his own violence. And the public is not innocent. The clowns won't stop as long as the clapping continues.
